Let's get real here! We use our kitchen towel sets over and over. They get worn out, frayed, stained. New sets are always welcome. And lucky for us, new designs come out regularly. So we have an easy option for a gift idea.

One of my favorite styles for kitchen decorating is a country apple look. Sure, you can use plenty of decorating on the walls and counters, but taking advantage of the table and the table linens make a good decor addition.

I use plenty of table linens in my house. I'm lucky in that I have both a table in my kitchen as well as a dining room with a table there. Of course, use him as your canister set and cookie jar. But, why not a wine bottle holder? Now that's a fun fat chef figurine. But he can also be just a little statute that graces your counter or a bookshelf in your kitchen.

Yes, I have a friend who has the most amazing collection of fat chef figurines. She's looking for more. Can you believe it? So when I went looking for new ones to give to her, I found some.

My gift turned out to be one those charming fat chef figurines that holds a serving tray above his head. Now, the tray isn't big enough to hold much. It's a small figurine. But I also found a miniature teapot and cup. You know the kind that are used for doll's houses. I set the tiny teapot and tea cup on the serving tray.

That fat chef figurine now holds an honored place among her collection. She sets the whole thing on several shelves in her kitchen. Yes, she has the best fat chef kitchen I've ever seen. But, being a little creative with a gift for her turned out to be just exactly right.

Cupcake Making the Easy Way

We're going to have a fun time in the kitchen. There are plenty of chores that need to be done to make meals, but cupcakes are just one of those fun things to do. But, let's make cupcakes the easy way. Let's use cupcake makers.

These handy little kitchen small appliances may not be used every day. But when they are needed, they are great! Cupcakes are the most popular dessert or sweets item these days. And for good reason. Overall, they are much more fun to make and decorate than a full sized cake. Actually, the decorating is the really fun part.

They are easier to serve and easier to eat. Slicing and plating are just not necessary with cupcakes. Neither is a fork and knife. So we are all enjoying making and serving cupcakes.

I first got a cupcake maker because I was going to have my granddaughter visiting for a week. What to do with an 8 year old little girl for all that time? She and I would make cookies often when she visited, but I wanted something different. Cupcakes were the perfect answer.

I was thrilled to discover that cupcake makers weren't terribly expensive. In fact, many turned out to be pretty inexpensive! Since I thought we were going to use it only a few times, then pack away until her next visit, I got a cheap one.

It turned out to be a pretty inexpensive way to discover that I love making cupcakes. I have since replaced the cheap cupcake maker with a better one. Now, I make the dessert kind of cupcakes, but I also make dinner muffins and breakfast muffins in my cupcake maker. Yes, I use it several times a week.

Always aware of the addition of more small appliances in the kitchen, it was beneficial to test out whether I would want this one or not. It turned out to a valuable addition to my kitchen. Probably yours as well.

Handy Knife Sets in a Wood Block

When preparing food for meals or snacks, life is so much easier when I have the tools that I need handy. That is especially true for me with my knives. Which probably explains why I like to have a good butcher block knife set in my kitchen.

This isn't anything tricky, it's just a matter of having my kitchen tools handy. I'll give you an example of why I prefer that.

I was helping my daughter prepare for a Father's Day party. She had lots of great food planned out. It was a matter of putting together all the ingredients and some cooking. Yes, the food spread she had was great, but the prep time was longer and more hectic than necessary.

Both of us spent useless time searching for the right kitchen tools. She kept all her sharp knives in one drawer, which did help. But none of them were organized. So, don't you know what I got for her after this party prep experience? A butcher block knife set.

Now, I have some criteria for a good knife set in a block. First, the knives need to be good ones. Good ones making the job of slicing and chopping so much easier. Then the block itself must be not only nice looking, but also easy to clean. My butcher block knife set sits out on the counter. I want it to look good and clean up easily.

Again, this isn't anything tricky. It's just a matter of making the kitchen chores for food preparation easier. Having the right kitchen tools and having them handy is all this is. I certainly don't want to dig through a knife drawer to find the knife for the job. Been there, done that. And paid for it with little cuts on my fingers.

My butcher block knife set is ideal to quickly find the perfect knife for the job. Anybody who helps out in my kitchen has the same ease when they need a knife. Simple, yet ideal.

Barbeque Aprons for the Man Chef

When my son-in-law took over the kitchen duties for their family, he never even thought about an apron. He has about 6 of them. They were all gifts and frankly only used when he's grilled for a party. So he never thought even of pulling one out.

By the way, he has two young daughters who help him in the kitchen. Yep, you get the idea. Splattered and spilled on food was almost a staple on his clothes. Not to mention what the daughter's looked like!

When the daughters got aprons, it was time to pull out Dad's aprons, too. He's got some funny ones, I have to admit. A bunch of them I featured for my article on barbeque aprons for men. Plus more that I thought were just plain fun.

Yep, they are barbeque oriented. And they are funny for the barbeque, but they work great in the kitchen, too. After all, washing an apron is way easier than washing shirts, slacks, jeans, socks, even shoes. You know with little girls helping in the kitchen, you may end up washing shoes!

In many kitchens I know, an apron is considered one of those essential tools that we keep handy. If it is for your kitchen, you might want a barbeque apron for the times when the man takes over. 

Rice Steamers for Easy Grain Cooking

Do you love rice and the other grains like quinoa and barley, even millet, as much as I do? Then you need an easy way to cook them. And have them come out right every time.

I was terrible at cooking rice and grains. Therefore I only bought the prepackaged, microwave or instant stuff. And rice was the only option going that way. The other grains weren't available in instants.

But, it was my sister who convinced me to get a rice steamer. Yes, I went kicking and screaming. Did I really need another small kitchen appliance? In this case, definitely. A rice steamer was an electrical gift from the heavens. At least as far as my grain cooking.

The best part is that you just set the timer, turn the thing on and forget it. When the rest of your dinner is ready, the rice or grain is too. And so perfect. I couldn't believe it.

My rice steamer turned out to pay for itself very quickly, too. I no longer bought those expensive instant rices. I started spending less on the food by getting the dried rice and grains. I could cook them easily and eat healthier. Yep, really. All of that from one small kitchen appliance - a rice steamer!

The Right Kitchen Tools Make Cooking Chores Easier

We all know that having the right tools for any job will make it easier and better. In the kitchen, the chores of chopping, cooking, even clean-up can be drudgery. At least for me. When I discovered that the right kitchen tools really do make things easier, I was hooked.

Just take the job of cutting fresh vegies. I love eating salads, but the idea of cutting up all the vegetables was just too much work. Then I got a good set of knives. Wow. Suddenly, I could much more easily chop and slice the vegetables to go in my salad. Plus, I started eating healthier.

I stopped buying the expensive salad fixings from the grocery store. I could buy the less expensive fresh vegetables and make up my own salad. Yes, the cost of the quality knife set started paying for itself immediately.

Honestly, I couldn't believe how much easier my kitchen chores became. The right tools really did matter. The example of the knife set was just one. I've since added in a number of other little kitchen appliances to make those chores easier as well.

Now, my cooking is more fun for me, I'm eating healthier, and my grocery bill is way down. All that, just because I made the move to use the right kitchen tools. Granted, I'm still not a great cook. But, I do enjoy cooking more. That translates into more interesting food for my family.

A Step Stool in Every Retro Kitchen

Of course, we all remember our grandmother's kitchen with that fun step stool she had. As kids, didn't we pull it out and play with it? I sure remember those times.

The step stool was a necessity in those days of the 1950's. And for the same reasons that it's needed today. But the look of those step stools is definitely unique to the retro kitchen.

The mid-century ushered in a new world. Called modern back then, it came out of the space age technology. As much it came out of post-war activity. The women of the 1950's had experienced working in the factories, earning their own money and doing more than keeping the home fires burning. Their kitchens reflected this new freedom.

The world of the country kitchen with all of it's stand-alone storage furniture was gone. In came built-in cabinets. And these cabinets were now reaching above the sink and counters. Even above the refrigerator. Women needed help reaching those top shelves.

Enter the step stool. Gramma didn't need a ladder or a tall son to reach everything. She could do it herself.
