Adding Coca-Cola Stuff to Your Retro Kitchen

Retro kitchens can always benefit from at least a few Coca-Cola items. In the 1950's Coke was a popular product and the diner looks happily advertized the soda all over the place. Plenty of wall signs, advertising items and even the functional diner plates.

Coca-Cola and the Retro kitchen seem to go easily hand in hand. The bold red that Coke uses for it's iconic symbol is a color very popular in the retro look. So the decorating items can go very well with your color scheme.

But, if you have chosen one of the other great mid-century colors, like pink, aqua blue, yellow, even orange, you can still add Coca-Cola memorabilia for a strong accent color. Plenty of the advertising items from that period didn't feature that bold red. Instead, they used their name and an iconic image of a happy 1950's housewife.

You don't have to go digging through old attics and basements or scour through antique malls or flea markets. Retro Coca-Cola stuff is being reproduced currently. Easy to get, no cleaning or refurbishing needed and could be lots less expensive for you.

So go ahead and add Coca-Cola stuff to your retro kitchen. The look is fun and the effect is definitely that great mid-century classic.

Jessie Steele Aprons for a Retro Look

It's no secret. I enjoy aprons. Wearing aprons and using them for decorating my kitchen. If you haven't discovered the world of Jessie Steele aprons, then you are in for a treat.

Talk about cute, beautiful and delightful aprons! I love them all. The Jessie Steele collection is all about treating ourselves to great looks.

We are not talking about the plain and functional-only style of apron, but those frilly, charming and gorgeous looks that work so well to wear. I always add one of my Jessie Steele aprons as part of my outfit when I'm entertaining. If I have a theme for my party, an apron that fits that theme is ideal.

But I use aprons more than just for wearing. I decorate with them as well. My kitchen has a nice collection of aprons hanging from hooks along one wall.

When I want to switch around my decor a bit, all I have to do is bring out different aprons. I might switch around some accent pieces as well, but the different look of the aprons really changes the effect of my retro kitchen decor.

It's so simple and easy to do, especially using the great retro-look aprons of the Jessie Steele collection. Get yourself a few, or pick some for gifts. Aprons make great gift choices for any chef or just because you can give something unique.

Retro Kitchen Wall Clocks

Adding a wall clock in a retro style to your kitchen can truly bring in some of that retro look. It's usually where I start when I am redecorating my kitchen into a new theme.

The choices for retro wall clocks are fun. We think of that great era in history for the mid-century. That time when the world wars were over and life was taking on a new look and feel. Women were still the head of the kitchen, but they wanted more.

So the look of space-age was born. That look is reflected in so many of the retro wall clocks. Bold colors were used, clocks were made with some "new-fangled" far-out looks. This then translated into a fun way to show off your "new" style as a 1950's housewife.

When you are designing your retro kitchen look, be sure to add a wall clock to put some of that space-age look to your decor.

Choosing Color Schemes for a Retro Kitchen

When choosing your colors to create a retro kitchen look, you need to be thinking about bold, bright and interesting colors. But, that's not all. Pastels were big in the 1950's look of the kitchen as well.

It was not unusual to see a pink or baby blue kitchen. Pure white with black accents was also a popular color scheme. In other words, colors that had not been in the domain of the kitchen before, came boldly to the forefront in the 1950's.

Yellows and orange color schemes showed up in kitchens as well. Reds and aqua blues seemed to be a mainstay in the new homes of the era. But the effect of chrome accented every color.

In the mid-century, women were delighted with colorful look of their kitchens. They created a haven for the cooking and dining that was entirely their domain.

So when you are thinking of your color scheme, think colorful. You can start with a main color and use a strong accent to go with it. Think about yellow as a main color. Then you can choose red, blue, even orange as your strong accent color. Or start with white and use any color as your accent. Remember to keep in mind the chrome effect that will show off just about any color scheme in your retro kitchen.

Adding Retro Furniture to Your Kitchen

You've picked out a great color scheme and some wonderful retro accents for your kitchen, now it's time to think about furniture You need a table and chairs, maybe a step stool to complete your look. Retro is all about the time of the 1950's.

World wars are over and the aftermath of those wars has settled. Women who used to be manning the factories while their men were off fighting, got a taste of something more. The kitchen was still their domain, but now they wanted more to the their kitchens as well. The 1950's was a prosperous time in history. Families could afford to buy new homes and redecorate the ones they had.

Designers and manufacturers took up the new ideas with zeal. Bright, bold, interesting colors came out and sleek, easy-to-clean furniture and appliances were the order of the day. Formica appeared on the scene, as did plastic and chrome.

That's the direction kitchen furniture went. Skip the tablecloths and go right for the Formica table tops. Usually edged in chrome, with clean lines and clean surfaces. Chair pads were plastic and came in those bright, bold, interesting colors. Bright red, black, aqua blue were popular colors for chair pads. Bistro sets with taller tables and stools were popular for small kitchens and breakfast nooks.
